Frequently Asked Questions

Where will my daughter live at camp?

Pathfinders and Trailblazers live in cabins. Challengers and Explorers live in platform tents. Camper housing does not have electricity in order to promote more engagement with the outdoors. They share their cabin with around eight campers and at least one staff member (exact number based on New York State health code and American Camp Association regulations). Each division has a washhouse with electricity, hot water, toilets, and showers.

Can I choose my daughter’s cabin mates?

You can request one cabin mate for your daughter in the registration process. We will do our best to accommodate these requests. If your daughter’s cabin mate is in a different division, the older camper can move to the younger division if desired.

What are the age groups at camp?

Our age divisions are based on the grade a camper has completed before attending Cedarbrook.

  • Pathfinders: Grades 2-4

  • Trailblazers: Grades 5-6

  • Challengers: Grades 7-8

  • Explorers: Grades 9-11

The divisions have separate living spaces and typically do separate evening programs. Activities offered per division are based on developmental guidelines and availability. Campers mingle between divisions at all-camp activities, during free time, and at flex time (before lunch).

How long would my daughter have to stay at camp?

Our shortest sessions are one week (Sunday - Saturday). Campers are welcome to stay for more than one week (and many do!). We also run one two-week session (The Two Week Experience) where all campers stay for two weeks.

What happens in a day at camp?

Our camp days are filled with fun and activities! You can find a full schedule here.

What activities are offered at camp?

Girls choose three activities they want to focus on during each session they are at camp. Activities are based on age and availability. They can include: Swimming, Canoeing, Archery, Crafts, Horsemanship (extra fee), Sailing, Kayaking, Riflery, Hiking, Outdoor Living Skills, Nature, Drama, High Ropes, and Challenge Course.

How do I get to camp?

Driving directions can be found here. Campers can also choose to take a bus to camp from either Hawthorne, NJ or New Hyde Park, NY. Learn more about the bus here.

Can I communicate with my daughter?

Campers receive letters every day the mail is delivered and one-way emails through our registration website. We also update social media regularly and post photos to a secure website. We will contact families by phone when necessary (i.e. illness, extreme homesickness). Campers are not allowed to bring phones or electronic devices to camp.

Why do you use bird names?

At Cedarbrook we have a long tradition of staff having "Bird Names." This comes from the Bible in 1 Kings 17 where Elijah is fed by ravens in the Kerith Ravine. The Lord provided for and sustained Elijah with these birds. Cedarbrook (formerly Cherith) staff are spiritually feeding and caring for our campers during their time at camp.

Does Camp Cedarbrook have a denomination?

Camp Cedarbrook is non-denominational. We have a statement of faith that adheres to the basic essential tenets of the evangelical, protestant Christian faith.

Will my daughter be able to do laundry?

Campers staying three or more weeks will have their laundry done after their second week. Service crew members may launder clothes as often as needed.

What is the food like?

Our camp meals are both nutritious and well-loved by campers. We serve three family-style meals each day, with a salad bar available at lunch and dinner. For campers with dietary restrictions or allergies, we provide alternative options to accommodate their needs.

Does my daughter need to be vaccinated to attend Camp Cedarbrook?

New York State strongly recommends vaccinations, but does not require them for camp attendance. If your daughter is not fully vaccinated, you will need to sign a statement acknowledging the risks. All campers are screened for contagious symptoms upon arrival, and our staff is trained to monitor camper health daily, reporting any concerns to the camp nurse.

How do you train your staff?

Our counselors are mature young women who have completed at least one year of college and are 18 years old or older. Many of our staff have grown up with us as campers and have completed our Camper in Leadership Training (CILT) program.

Every counselor, staff member and volunteer is carefully screened in order to create a safe and positive experience for campers. The hiring process includes reference checks, a background check, and an interview. All staff attend approximately two and a half weeks of pre-camp training, which includes fine-tuning their skills in counseling and group dynamics, activity area specialties, and safety procedures. All counselors and staff supervising high-risk activities (for example, archery, boating, riflery, and swimming) have met strict American Camping Association certification standards.

Will my daughter be safe at camp?

Camp Cedarbrook undergoes an annual inspection by the New York State Health Department, which enforces one of the strictest children's camp codes. We are also accredited by the American Camp Association, ensuring a voluntary peer review of our operations, including staff qualifications, training, and emergency management. A Registered Nurse is on-site throughout the summer, and a doctor is always on call. With a low staff-to-camper ratio, most staff directly working with campers are certified in Red Cross CPR and First Aid. Safety is a top priority at Camp Cedarbrook, and campers are supervised at all times.

Camp Cedarbrook in the Adirondacks is not a rehabilitative or therapeutic program and does not specialize in serving those with special needs, including mental, emotional, social, or behavioral difficulties. Safe participation requires certain physical, mental, emotional, and social health abilities, and we are therefore limited in the types of accommodations we are able to provide. Participants must be in good mental, emotional, and social health and be able to function in a group setting in a positive and cooperative manner that displays tolerance and respect for self and others. Participants must be able and willing to follow all instructions and refrain from behaviors that pose a risk to self or others.

Camp Cedarbrook is inspected and licensed by the Saratoga County Department of Health. Reports are filed in the district office at 6012 County Farm Road, Ballston Spa, NY 12020.

How much is camp and do you offer scholarships?

Camp rates can be found on this page. Additional fees include include camp store money, bus transportation, and specialized activities (horsemanship, trips). We offer scholarships based on need and the application can be found on our registration website.
